This painting was discovered at an auction in 2015, were it was listed as "continental school, nineteenth century" (auction catalogue 2015-09-22, no. 216). It was recognized as an early painting by Rembrandt, part of the series of the five senses (Van Tuinen 2016, p. 22-36). - Datering

- The panel was enlarged and overpainted in the eighteenth century, just like the other panels from this series. However, unlike the decision made during the restoration of the other paintings, it was decided not to remove this enlargement but to cover it with the frame (online collection catalogue, accessed 2017-04-06).
